Cappella Medicea

CAPPELLA MEDICEA

Seravezza, Italy
2006
The work presented here includes a video-performance, a group of e-mails written during the period of several months, and a prayer cord with a hundred knots. The performance represents the movement of contraction and expansion of the body in the attempt to control suffering. As in a cycle we enter into this dance trying to appear whole, but in reality we are broken.
The letters between two “sisters” serve as a medium to share their suffering and a few joys. The pseudonymous names Scarlett and Cassandra allude to the symbolic characteristics of two women:the strong and determined Irish Scarlett able to overcome her suffering and to project herself into the future with the will to live, and the Greek prophetess Cassandra condemned by a god to see the future and to tell it to others, though, without being believed,
The prayer cord is a sacred object of great importance in many religions, an aid to meditation; it is a ladder, a bridge extended toward God by man, who climbs with great difficulty the hundred steps to the sky. Thus the emphasis of this work is both human and spiritual.
