The Covering (El Manto)

THE COVERING (EL MANTO)

Fuller Seminary Campus
Pasadena, California
October 6, 2018

The Covering was a temporary site-specific installation created to accompany and support the Bilingual Conference (Church Without Borders) at Fuller Seminary Campus. The artwork was displayed on and around the seven sections of the 70" long fence (The Wall), located at the back of the Prayer Garden.
Different symbolic elements were used: fabric, gold cord, water and salt. The hand embroidered fabric (gauze), covering the top part of the fence, was representing the seen/unseen Presence and protection of God.
Gold filament and cord were used to decorate the material as symbols of His Divinity.
Small bags containing salted water were hung on the lower part of the fence, representing the tears and sweat of the continuous efforts of His people in an attempt to close the gap among the churches, people and internal walls.
The salt below the fence represented healing.
Two small sculptures, a prostrated figure and a foot, were placed in the installation during the worship,
one on a small "altar" of rocks and the other by the open section of the fence.
This installation was interactive. The participants to the conference were encouraged to offer their thoughts and prayers by adding content to the wall.
